Planning to come to Thailand? The kind of visa you need to get can be confusing.
I've broken it down by your intent.
Tourist - 15 to 60 days & 30 day extension
If you just want to visit Thailand for tourism purposes, depending on which country you come from you might not need a visa at all. There are still a few countries that need to get a visa or visa on arrival - click here to check with our handy tool. These are generally not multiple entry visas, you restart your term when you re-enter.
Digital Nomad / Long Term Traveller - 6-12 months
You can get the new Destination Thailand Visa (DTV). And this allows you to stay for up to 6 months at a time with one extension per year. Which means you can be in Thailand 12 months continously. Leave the country and come back for another 6 or 12 month term. This is a multiple entry visa. You need to show financial capability. You cannot do business in Thailand.
Business or Employment - 1 Year renewable
You will need a work permit with a Business (Non-B) Visa. You can start a business in Thailand with this visa, or work at a company here. The visa renews once per year.
Marriage - 1 Year renewable
If you are going to get married in Thailand, or are already married to a Thai national and you both plan to live here, then this is the visa for you. By marrying a Thai national you are eligible for a work permit and can do business or get a job in Thailand.
Retirement - 1 Year, 5 Year or 10 Year renewable
You can get a standard 1 year retrement visa (O-A), a 5 year (O-X) visa, or a 10 Year Long Term Residence (LTR) visa. With these visas you do have to show a significant financial commitment by having funds in your bank account in Thailand. You can't do business in Thailand.
Extended Stays - 5 to 20 Years
The Thailand privilege visa (Elite Visa) is for you if you plan do just stay in Thailand for a long time. You straight up pay for this visa which is money you do not get back, so be sure this is what you want. You can't do business in Thailand.
Permanent Residency / Citizenship
Despite what many people say, this is very possible and not that hard to get. You do need to have a business or a job in Thailand and have been paying taxes in the kingdom for at least 3 continuous years with some minimum income. You also have to learn basic conversational Thai. There is a quota per country, but because many people do not apply, there is generally room for you.
