The Non-Immigrant O visa — marriage category — is a long stay visa issued to foreign nationals who are legally married to a Thai citizen. It gives you the right to live in Thailand as a resident without needing a job, a work permit , or a Thai company to sponsor you.

Option one — bank deposit. Keep 400,000 THB in a Thai bank account. At current exchange rates that is approximately £8,700 or $11,000 USD. Half of what the retirement visa requires. The balance must have been in your account for at least two months before your extension application, and must not drop below 400,000 THB after approval.

Option two — monthly income. Show 40,000 THB per month in regular income from any foreign source — salary paid in your home country, pension, investment income, rental income, anything that arrives consistently. Again, lower than the retirement visa's 65,000 THB monthly requirement.

Option three — combination. Combine bank balance and monthly income to reach the equivalent annual total. If your monthly income is below 40,000 THB, the shortfall can be covered with a bank balance. The combined approach works the same way it does for the retirement visa — Thailand just wants to see that you can financially support yourself without working locally.

Can I work on a marriage visa? The Non-O marriage visa does not automatically grant you the right to work. To work for a Thai employer or run a Thai registered business, you still need a separate work permit. However, income from foreign sources — salary paid abroad, pension, investments — is not affected. Many marriage visa holders work remotely for foreign companies entirely legally.

Does it matter which country we got married in? Your marriage must be registered in Thailand at the district office (amphoe) to be recognised for immigration purposes. If you married abroad, you will need to get the marriage registered in Thailand. This process involves translation, notarisation, and a visit to the district office — but it is a standard process that many couples complete without issue.

What if we have children? Children do not automatically create a visa right for a foreign parent, but having children with your Thai spouse may be relevant to other visa categories and can strengthen the documentation for your marriage visa renewal by demonstrating family ties in Thailand.

What if the marriage ends? The marriage visa is contingent on the marriage. If you divorce, you lose the basis for the visa. In that situation, you would need to transition to another visa category — the retirement visa if you are 50+, a DTV visa, or another appropriate pathway. Immigration officers will sometimes check marriage status at annual extensions, particularly if there are inconsistencies in the application.
