I've prepared a lightning round for you guys who are thinking of getting married in Thailand.

Let's go!

The Marriage
Just like in your country, you can have a marriage ceremony all you want, but you must both register the union at the local government office to be legal.

Marriage Visas
You get a marriage visa that is renewable once a year. You still have to report your presence in Thailand every 90 days and if you're the foreign man, you need to keep 400K THB in the bank or earn a minimum of 40K THB per month. If you are a foreign woman you do not have any financial requirement.

Work Permits
If you marry a Thai citizen either in Thailand or another country, you are entitled to a work permit in Thailand which makes it possible for you to work or have a business here. Foreign women marrying a Thai husband do not need a work permit.

Permanent Residency & Citizenship
Foreign husbands cannot get permanent residency or citizenship in Thailand on the basis of marriage. However foreign women marrying Thai men can directly apply for citizenship after one year (with children) or three years (if no children).

Property
Majority of any property has to be in the name of your Thai spouse.

Divorce & Child Support
Divorce in Thailand is generally very quick - just go down to the government office together and that's it if you are both agreed. Otherwise you can have a court divorce that can be just as nasty as in your country. There is no law for alimony. However alimony (spousal support) can be granted by the court after considering all the factors. Child support is mandatory.

Should you get married in Thailand?
Laws here tend to be more fair to both parties as opposed to western countries which are tilted towards women. However people in Thailand are quick to get divorces for various reasons.

If you trust your partner explicitly, then it surely can be a good way forward.

Either way, get a good lawyer, and write a prenup. Will save you many headaches if things don't turn out well.
