What the Thailand education visa is

The education visa, often called the ED visa or Non-Immigrant ED, is the permission to stay in Thailand while you study an approved course. The most popular version is built around Thai language classes. You enrol in a registered language school, the school confirms your place to immigration, and you receive a long stay visa tied to that course. While the visa is valid you live in Thailand legally, attend your classes, and learn to read, speak and handle daily life in Thai.

Why people choose the education visa

For many foreigners the education visa is the simplest way to settle into Thailand for the first year or two. The reasons are practical:

• No financial requirement. Unlike the retirement or business routes, you do not need to show 800,000 THB in the bank or prove a monthly income. This is the main reason younger people and those without large savings choose it.
• You can open a Thai bank account. The ED visa gives you the kind of long stay status most banks want to see, so you can finally open a Thai account, get a debit card, and stop relying on foreign cards and cash.

How the course works

You choose a course length and study Thai for a set number of hours each week. There are two standard options.

Six month course

• Tuition is 18,000 THB, paid to the school.
• 15 hours of class per week.
• You must keep at least 90 percent attendance.

One year course

• Tuition is 30,000 THB, paid to the school.
• 15 hours of class per week.
• You must keep at least 90 percent attendance.

The 15 hours a week is a government rule, not a school preference. How those hours are spread out is up to the school, so the timetable can be a few weekday mornings, a couple of longer evening sessions, or weekend blocks. We will tell you the current schedule before you commit.

Attendance matters. Immigration can and does check that education visa holders are really studying, and weak attendance can put your next extension at risk. Treat the classes as real, because they are what keeps your visa valid.

When you finish a course you can move up to the next level and apply again. That is how people use the education visa to stay in Thailand for two, three or more years while they build a life here.

Two ways to apply

There are two routes, and the right one depends on where you are now.

1. Switch inside Thailand

If you are already here, or you arrive on a tourist visa, you can convert to the education visa without leaving the country. You do not have to fly out and come back. The full conversion takes around 40 days to complete, and we manage the timing so your tourist stay does not run out before the new visa is in place.

2. Apply from your home country

If you are still abroad, the school prepares your enrolment documents and immigration paperwork, which takes about 30 days to process. Once the documents are ready you collect the visa at a Thai embassy or consulate near you, then enter Thailand on the education visa from day one.

What you need

• A passport valid for longer than the course you want to take.
• Passport photos and the standard visa application forms, which we prepare with you.
• The school enrolment documents, which we arrange with our partner school.

That is the short list. There is no bank balance to show and no income to prove.

Open a Thai bank account

This is the part many people care about most. Opening a Thai bank account on a tourist stamp is difficult and often refused. On an education visa you have the long stay status banks are looking for, which makes the account far easier to open. A local account means a Thai debit card, easy transfers, bill payments and a normal financial life here instead of living off foreign cards and ATM fees. We guide you to a suitable bank and branch and help you through the process.

What this costs

• Our handling fee: 7,500 THB. This covers the liaison with the school and the management of your visa application from start to finish.
• Immigration fee: 2,000 THB. This is the government fee, paid separately to immigration.
• School tuition: 18,000 THB for the six month course or 30,000 THB for the one year course, paid to the school.
