Thailand DTV Visa Rules Have Changed Worldwide: What Applicants Need to Know

If you are planning to apply for Thailand’s Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), there is an important change you should know about.

Starting 31 August 2026, Thai embassies and consulates are tightening the rules around where DTV applications can be submitted. This change may significantly affect people who previously planned to travel from Thailand to a nearby country such as Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, or Indonesia to apply for their visa.
 

What Has Changed?

Previously, some DTV applicants who were already in Thailand — or who wanted to avoid traveling all the way back to their home country — would leave Thailand and apply through a Thai embassy or consulate in another country.

For example, someone staying in Thailand might travel to Laos or Vietnam, submit their DTV application there, and then return to Thailand once the visa was approved.

From 31 August 2026, this strategy is no longer generally available simply because you are physically present in that country.

Under the new requirements, DTV applicants generally need to apply in a country where they are a national or permanent resident, and they may be required to provide proof of that status.

In other words, being in a country as a tourist is generally no longer enough to make it your DTV application location.
 

Does This Mean DTV Is No Longer Available?

No.

The DTV itself is still available for eligible applicants. The major change is related to where you can apply.

If you are currently in your home country, or in another country where you have qualifying nationality or permanent residency, you may still be able to apply for a DTV if you meet the visa requirements.

Applicants should also be prepared to provide the documents required by the relevant Thai embassy or consulate. These can include proof of financial eligibility and other supporting documents, depending on the applicant’s circumstances and the mission handling the application.

For this reason, it is important to check the requirements that apply to your specific situation before making travel or visa plans.
 

What About Applying in Laos, Vietnam, or Other Nearby Countries?

This is one of the biggest questions for people currently in Thailand.

If you were planning to travel to Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, or another nearby country solely to submit a DTV application while visiting there as a tourist, you should reconsider your plans.

The new rules are not simply a Laos-specific change. Thai missions around the world are implementing tighter requirements concerning the applicant’s connection to the country where they submit their application.

Individual embassies and consulates may publish their own local instructions, so applicants should not assume that a previous application route will continue to be accepted after 31 August.
 

What If You Already Submitted Your Application?

There is an important distinction between planning to apply and having already submitted and paid for an application.

Applicants who submitted and paid before the new rules took effect may be treated under the previous requirements, depending on the applicable Thai mission and its transition arrangements.

If you have already started a DTV application, check your application status and keep records of your submission and payment.
 

What Should DTV Applicants Do Now?

If you are considering a DTV, the best approach is to check your application location before booking flights or making other arrangements.

Ask yourself:

• Am I applying from a country where I am a national or permanent resident?
• Can I provide proof of my status there?
• Do I meet the financial and other DTV requirements?
• Does the Thai embassy or consulate where I plan to apply accept applications from someone in my situation?
• Have the local requirements recently changed?

Getting these questions answered in advance can help you avoid unnecessary travel, delays, or having to change your visa plans at the last minute.
